Bona Knives Frontier Scarred Antler custom knife is an inseparable companion of a forest tramp and a great proposition for collectors of extraordinary blades.
Frontier knives are made of steel that can be easily sharpened in the field (NCV1), which goes back to the past of cutlery and the art of using knives. The blades have a variety of fancy finishes and patterns. Each of them is unique and one of a kind. In the knifemaker’s dictionary, this type of finish is referred to as “chaotic satin coated with random oxidation”. These treatments and amphibian roughness are performed in an original way by a knifemaker. The handles are mainly made of deer antlers dyed by the creator and have a leather wrapping prepared by a knifemeker in a way that guarantees resistance to weather conditions. Sheaths made of natural vegetable tanned leather (cowhide and deer chamois) have a variety of colors and accessories individually selected for each project by the creator. The Frontier is a knife that appears to have many irregularities at first glance, but is in fact planned in every unevenness and roughness from start to finish by the creator.
Bona Knives – The Art Of Harmony
Since many years, Bona Knives has been creating extraordinary knives that have the character of talismans for many of their users. The knives and sheaths designed by the knifemaker have many executive nuances that we can pick up over time, and we can only guess the meanings of some of them. In Marcin Bona’s Art of Harmony, every detail is “for something”! This makes communing with its products and “discovering” them every day an amazing adventure in itself. Bona Knives – Marcin Bona apart from the product, provides inspiration, a story and a coherent concept. It is not without reason that many consider his works to be cult.
About presented execution of Frontier knife
Custom execution
Presented Frontier knife was made as a custom execution. This means that only single piece like shown was made. Frontier custom knife has features that are not repeated in other versions. Each Frontier is different.
Universal blade
The knife blade, profiled in the drop point style, with a flat grind, in use is very effective and recommended for all types of work. The NCV1 steel used as the core of the structure is characterized by good sharpness. One of its most important features is very high fracture resistance, hence it is eagerly used in bushcraft knives. This steel is easy to sharpen, which is undoubtedly an advantage when there is a need to perform this activity in the field. The edges of the spine of the blade are sharply finished (but not so cut that it is easy to cut yourself), allowing you to work efficiently with the flint.
The finish of the blade (chaotic satin, random oxidation, roughness of the amphibian) made in an original way by a knifemaker, apart from the unique visual effect, has the advantage that it fits perfectly with the traces of use of the blade. The Frontier knife is designed in such a way that the signs of wear on it give it a taste and individual character, and finally they fit “as if they were meant to be” from the beginning.
The Frontier custom knife has a full-tang construction, the strongest construction found in knives. The knife tang extends over the entire handle to which the covers are attached.
Handle from deer antlers
The handle, made of deer antlers, dyed brown, is different in each Frontier version. The pores and cavities visible on it are completely natural, they were not “lost” during the refinement of the handle. The covers are permanently attached to the steel core. They are glued and attached with decorative pins. At the junction of the handle with the blade, a natural leather wrapper was made. The wrapper specially prepared by the creator is as hard as the rest of the handle, it is tight and resistant to weather conditions. The wrapper, in addition to the decorative function, has the function of “handle – safety controller”. Namely, when we hold the knife in our hand, we feel roughness under our fingers and this roughness marks the border between the handle and the blade. For a user “tame” with his knife, it is an additional safety feature that prevents the hand from sliding over the cutting edge and prevents hand injuries in this way.
Handmade natural leather sheath
The knife set includes a carefully finished natural leather sheath designed by a knifemaker. The sheath is made of two layers: the inner one is made of bovine sheath and the outer one is made of a dyed deer chamois. The side of the sheath has been sewn with thick threads and reinforced with tucked nails, which also have a decorative function. The cutting edge is not in contact with the nails as it is separated by a leather spacer. Thus, the blade cannot be blunted and the risk of cutting the sheath when inserting a knife into it is limited. The sheath is attached to the belt with a belt loop on the back. The knife is embedded in the sheath quite deeply, which prevents it from being lost. However, there is so much sticking out of it that there is no difficulty in taking it out. In the manufacturing process, the color of the sheath was given with completely natural paints.
The sheath made in the “borderland style” has decorations in the form of leather fringes with beads individually selected for the project. Inseparably consistent with the design of the knife, it shows how important a knife was in the past. Often richly decorated, handicraft made of materials available at the disposal, it emphasized the importance of the tool carried in it, which often determined the user’s survival.
This spirit was definitely expressed by Marcin Bona in his project.
